Book Review: Why I am a Member of the Church of Christ

Author: Leroy Brownlow

In an era where the religious world seems bent on finding better ways than the gospel to attract people to Christ it’s nice to occasionally read one of the old classics. In “Why I Am a Member of the Church of Christ” the author, the late Leroy Brownlow (1914-2002), returns to the basics! First published in 1945 this little book consists of twenty-five simple studies on what makes the Church of Christ not only unique but more importantly the church of the Bible. Almost all the major themes of scripture are covered from the structure of the Bible itself to the major doctrines enjoined by the New Testament apostles on the first century church.

In this simple to read volume the reader will rediscover some of the reasons the Church of Christ has often stood out as unique and even been controversial in its doctrinal stance. While non-confrontational in spirit, Brownlow does not hesitate to point out the doctrinal errors of both Catholicism and the denominations of a fractured Christendom. In his foreword Brownlow states his purpose for the book saying, “An effort has been made in this volume to set forth material that will be an asset to the children of God in preparing themselves to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason concerning the hope that is in them; material that may be used in home study to indoctrinate the children, for each generation must be indoctrinated: a book that may be circulated in the field of personal evangelisms…”  Brownlow accomplishes these purposes and more.

From a personal perspective this book, no matter what edition one is able to purchase, is a great tool for personal Bible study, studies with others, or sermon material for congregational teachers. Because the book was first published over 70 years ago some of the language and terms may seem archaic and its illustrations may seem a bit out of date. However, with a little creativity this book can still be used effectively.

I personally use this book for personal work and studies with new converts and have found that the best method is to obtain a copy for each student.  In each study session we read out loud to each other stopping as appropriate to discuss what the book has said. Don’t forget to have a Bible handy to look up pertinent verses.  One final word of advice would be to not worry about getting through an entire lesson in a single session. Most of the lessons are quite short but I find it more important to discuss the material rather than worry about how fast we get through the book.

This book can be purchased both new and used via Amazon.
